God’s Standard of Humility

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. – Philippians 2:3-4

Many people, Singaporeans and including myself are proud by nature. We love to show off and we think it is alright to do so because that’s very nature of all of to do so.

Usually humility would be the last thing you would even consider when it comes to goal planning or purpose in life.

So what is humility? According to Oxford, it is defined as “the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance.”

What is interesting to note that even Christians today are very guilty of selfish ambition or vain conceit which we often do the opposite which is being proud

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6

We know this too well it is wrong to be proud and we all been through that in some moments of our life. Maybe even today those who are not Christians will feel it is alright to be proud anyway.

So why must be humble then and what’s God’s standard let’s read

“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.

When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:5-11

So Jesus had every right to demand service from us as He was God. But instead of doing that Jesus show us His love for us by actually serving us because He love us that much and He show that love by dying on the cross for our sin so that we can have a relationship with God again.

So I pray as you read this, you will be encourage to humble yourself today and come right with Jesus today.
